"Made Me a Lot of Money" — Automated Psychological Pricing for 20+ Countries

Lux Armony was selling decorative lighting products globally with fixed pricing across every country. We built a dynamic pricing system that applies country-specific psychological pricing rules automatically — converting and adjusting every price to match local expectations.

The Challenge

One Price Doesn't Work in Twenty Markets

Lux Armony sells decorative light bulbs and lighting products globally — Germany, Japan, the US, the UK, and a growing list of international markets. Their Shopify store had a single pricing strategy applied everywhere.

The problem is that pricing psychology varies significantly by country. German consumers are conditioned to trust prices ending in .95 — €29.95 reads as considered and fair. Japanese consumers respond better to round numbers — ¥3,000 feels right where ¥2,995 feels like a trick. US consumers expect .99 endings. UK consumers have their own norms by product category.

Fixed pricing across all markets meant Lux Armony was leaving conversion on the table in every single country they sold to. Local competitors, who priced to local norms, had a natural advantage. There was no practical way to manually manage pricing per country — too many SKUs, too many markets.

Key Pain Points:

  • Fixed pricing across all countries ignoring local psychological norms
  • Lower conversion rates versus local competitors who price correctly for each market
  • No practical way to manually set prices per country at scale
  • Revenue lost on every international visitor who saw a price that "felt wrong"

The Solution

Automated Psychological Pricing in Every Market

We built a dynamic pricing system that runs invisibly behind every visit to the Lux Armony store.

When a visitor lands on the site, their country is detected via IP geolocation. The pricing rules engine looks up the psychological pricing standard for that country, applies the appropriate ending convention and currency conversion, and updates the Shopify product prices in real time for that visitor's session.

A German visitor sees €29.95. A Japanese visitor sees ¥3,000. A US visitor sees $29.99. Every visitor sees a price that feels locally native — not a foreign brand applying foreign pricing logic.

The system works for every SKU across every supported country with zero manual management.

How It Works:

  1. Visitor lands on site — geolocation detects their country
  2. Pricing rules engine retrieves the psychological pricing convention for that country
  3. Currency conversion applied with appropriate rounding and decimal logic
  4. Shopify prices updated in real time for the visitor's session
  5. Visitor sees locally native pricing throughout browse and checkout

Implementation: Standard build

Technical Challenge: The pricing rules engine needed to handle currency conversion and psychological rounding simultaneously — different rules for different decimal conventions, rounding logic, and threshold calculations per country. Edge cases (prices that land on psychologically awkward numbers after conversion) required custom logic.

Theo, Lux Armony's founder, described the impact simply. The result was measurable enough that he attributes meaningful revenue growth directly to the pricing change — conversion improvements that compound across the full volume of international traffic.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this work for any e-commerce platform, not just Shopify?

The same approach works on any platform with a product pricing API — WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Magento, and others. The core logic (detect country → apply rules → update prices) is platform-agnostic.

How are new countries added?

Adding a new country means defining its pricing rules in the rules engine configuration — a simple addition that doesn't require any code changes. The system picks it up automatically from the next visit.
