"Made Me a Lot of Money" — Geo-Targeted Pricing That Converts in Every Market
Lux Armony
Lux Armony was selling decorative lighting products globally with one fixed price everywhere. But Germany, Japan, and the US have completely different psychological pricing expectations. We built a geolocation-triggered pricing engine on Shopify that applies the right price format for each country automatically — at scale, with no manual work.
The Problem
One price format across all markets means every visitor sees a number that feels slightly wrong — and that costs conversions.
Psychological pricing isn't universal. In Germany, prices ending in .95 feel credible and precise — —29.95 signals value. In Japan, round numbers feel trustworthy — —3,000, not —2,995. In the US, .99 endings are the norm for retail products. Deviate from these expectations and the price feels "off" in a way the customer can't articulate, but it reduces the likelihood they buy.
Lux Armony was selling the same products globally with a single price format. The drop-ship model meant they had hundreds of SKUs across multiple currencies, and there was no practical way to manually maintain country-specific pricing.
The fix wasn't a product change or a marketing change — it was a pricing systems change.
- Single price format applied globally, ignoring local psychological norms
- Lower-than-expected conversion rates in international markets
- No way to manually maintain per-country pricing across hundreds of SKUs
- Pricing that felt "foreign" compared to local competitors
What We Built
A real-time dynamic pricing engine that detects each visitor's country and applies the correct psychological price format via Shopify API.
Visitor geolocation detection
When a visitor lands on the store, their country is detected via IP geolocation. This happens in real time, invisibly, before any product page fully renders.
Pricing rules applied per country
A rules engine maps the visitor's country to the correct psychological pricing format: .95 endings for Germany, round numbers for Japan, .99 for the US, and so on for each market. Currency conversion is handled automatically.
Shopify prices updated in real time
The automation calls the Shopify API to update displayed prices for that visitor session. The visitor sees the psychologically correct price for their market — no manual intervention, no duplicate product listings, no hardcoded variants.
